AFF Cup 2024: Not the Main Focus for Indonesia’s National Team

As Indonesia prepares for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and the AFF/ASEAN Cup 2024, PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir offers a realistic perspective on the team’s priorities and targets. Recognizing the existing limitations, Erick Thohir states that not every competition is aimed for maximum results.

Coach Shin Tae-yong is considering splitting the team to manage both the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and the AFF/ASEAN Cup 2024. This strategy ensures optimal performance in each tournament despite limited resources.

Erick Thohir openly acknowledges that the AFF/ASEAN Cup, scheduled from November 23 to December 21, 2024, is not the primary focus. This doesn’t mean ignoring the competition but rather adopting a realistic approach given the available talent pool.

“Regarding the AFF, I have explained that we do not aim for maximum results in every competition” Erick said when meeting with journalists in Jakarta on Thursday (June 20, 2024).

Erick further explains the decision. One major consideration is the insufficient number of talents. Calling back younger players to the senior team is deemed unfair and suboptimal.

“Because, one, our talent pool is not sufficient. Even if we have them, we would have to bring in younger players again. If the current seniors play again, I think it’s not fair either,” Erick added.

Despite this, Erick assures that the Indonesian national team will still strive to give their best in every competition. While maximum results are not always the target, the team’s spirit and maximum effort remain a part of their commitment.

This decision is expected to provide a clear understanding to supporters and players that the chosen strategy and priorities are for the long-term benefit of Indonesian football.
