AFF U-16: Indonesia U-16’s Impressive 3-0 Win Against Singapore

The Indonesia U-16 National Team began their journey in the 2024 AFF U-16 Championship on a high note. In their opening Group A match against Singapore, held at Manahan Stadium on Friday (June 21, 2024) evening WIB, the Garuda Muda secured a commanding 3-0 victory.

From the outset, the team led by Nova Arianto played aggressively, constantly pressing Singapore’s defense. Despite missing several golden opportunities, including Nazriel’s shot in the 22nd minute, which was blocked by Singapore’s goalkeeper, Jarec Ng, and Evandra’s long-range shot in the 26th minute that went over the crossbar, the Garuda Muda remained relentless.

In the 29th minute, Singapore was awarded a penalty due to a handball by Indonesia’s captain, Putu Panji. However, Indonesian goalkeeper M. Ichsan successfully saved Nathan Mao’s penalty, keeping the score level.

In the 35th minute, Indonesia scored through Mierza, but the goal was disallowed for offside. The team’s efforts finally paid off in the 40th minute when Mierza scored Indonesia’s first goal with a header from Fabio’s throw-in, putting Indonesia ahead 1-0 by halftime. Mierza Firjatullah, named Best Player of the EPA Liga 1 U-14 season in 2022, showcased his skills and dominance up front. His experience training at CF Technifutbol in Spain was evident in his quality of play.

In the second half, Indonesia extended their lead with a penalty goal by Evandra in the 59th minute after Daniel was fouled in the box. Evandra successfully beat goalkeeper Jarec Ng, making it 2-0. Indonesia nearly added another goal in the 65th minute, but Fandi Ahmad’s long-range shot hit the crossbar.

One standout player was Fabio Azka Irawan, who not only provided the assist for the first goal but is also known for his lethal long throw-ins. Fabio, born in Tulang Bawang on February 29, 2008, and currently playing for Persija Jakarta U-16, has a throwing ability reminiscent of Pratama Arhan. He has been honing his long throw skills since childhood, making him a serious threat to opponents.

The third goal came in the 86th minute through Alberto’s shot, sealing Indonesia’s 3-0 victory.
