Toulon Cup 2024: Indonesia U-20 Defeated by South Korea 1-2

The match between Indonesia U-20 and South Korea U-21 at the Toulon Cup 2024 has concluded. The intense battle at Stade Rene Gimet, Saint-Chamas, France, on Friday (June 14, 2024) evening WIB, ended with South Korea securing a 2-1 victory.

This match aimed to determine the ninth place in the Tournoi Maurice Revello 2024. Despite the group stage and round robin system, the final position had to be decided through this single playoff match. Both teams finished at the bottom of their respective groups; Indonesia in Group B and South Korea in Group A.

From the outset, the Taegeuk Warriors sought to dominate the game and created several scoring opportunities. However, the first half ended in a goalless draw due to Indonesia’s solid defense and South Korea’s failure to capitalize on their chances.

At the beginning of the second half, South Korea came out strong. Jo Jin-ho broke the deadlock in the 47th minute, converting a precise pass from Kim Jung-hyun. Twelve minutes later, Baek Ji-ung doubled South Korea’s lead to 2-0 after successfully beating Indonesia’s goalkeeper, Ikram Algiffari.

Indonesia did not remain passive and continued to push forward. Their efforts paid off in the 77th minute when Mauresmo Hinoke scored to narrow the deficit to 2-1. However, Indonesia’s task became more challenging when substitute Mufli Hidayat was shown a red card in the dying moments of the match.

Indonesia U-20 finished at the bottom of Group B after suffering four defeats against Ukraine, Panama, Japan, and Italy. Meanwhile, South Korea fared slightly better with one draw and three losses in Group A. They managed to hold Mexico to a draw but lost in the penalty shootout.

This result means Indonesia U-20 finished in 10th place at the Toulon Cup 2024, while South Korea U-21 secured the 9th position.
